Does anyone in the Middle East wish oil had never been discovered so outsiders would leave the area alone?
Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. If you look at most parts of the world before the introduction of modern science and medicine, the biggest killer of men was warfare, and the biggest killer of women was childbirth.
This isn’t to say that these things wouldn’t have been surmounted without Western interference, but if you look at places in the Middle East *without* resources to exploit, you can see that they don’t have a terribly high quality of life, and if you were to look up the #1 killers of men and women you’d probably not be surprised.
If in the Middle East, oil had never been discovered, then it would’ve been left alone, for certain — but it would also never have advanced as far as it has. Try telling some citizen of Dubai that instead of a city that is the envy of quite a few Western governments that there would be nothing but sand.
