White Wispy

White Wispy
I can’t see colour in nebulae.. just wispy white stuff….?

Ok, so I have a Celestron AstroMaster 130. What am I doing wrong? Do I need filters or is my scope just not powerful enough?

Thanx!

Contrary to what some respondents have suggested, nebulae do indeed have colour, however my experience matches yours, I see pale grey-blue wisps not the vivid reds you see in pictures. The colours are there, it’s just that the combination of the telescope and your eye can’t collect enough light to sense the colours. Astro-imagers collect light for several hours for a single image to get those lovely coloured photos of objects like the Orion Nebula and the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae. The Hubble Space Telescope does the same. True, some of its images are in false colour to bring out specific features, but many are displayed in “true” colour, approximating what the human eye would see if it were sensitive enough.
