Expression Through Portraiture
Artists turn away from the challenge of portraiture, which is capturing emotions, moods, and moments. The living room walls of one Marion home are filled with portraits by a courageous, self taught artist, who lives there with his wife. His prized piece is called “Faces,” a huge montage of the faces of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. His other portraits are individual ones, of the lead singer from Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast and singer songwriter, and these fill the other walls. He commonly uses pencil, graphite, and charcoal in his work. Conte crayon and colored pencil pieces were next. His wedding photo with his Japanese wife, originally from Kobe, was the basis for his first colored pencil drawing. The work was an attempt to meld traditional American drawing with Japanese wood block print. He used their wedding picture, taken in December 1996 at City Hall, as the main subject and intertwined personal and Japanese symbols. Featured in the drawing but not in the actual wedding is their trio of cats. He turned the face of one of the cats into a mask from Japanese opera, which supposedly wards off evil spirits. Another cat is supposed to represent good luck, and he drew it in the proper position. In the drawing, the couple is dressed in kimonos. Her matriarchal symbol is a flower called the kikyo, which he uses to decorate her with. The third cat guards a gingko tree, seen behind the blinds outside the room. The gingko is a sign of longevity, and the artist thought of including it after seeing a tree at the University of Iowa. His wife takes care of all the brainstorming and testing of ideas. The drawing has high sentimental value for them, said the wife. His next challenge is incorporating his favorite figures onto landscapes. One book has featured four of his pieces, one as the cover, and he feels this is a good replacement for having a live exhibit. It was a staff member who presented his work to the book editor. He received an email from the editor, who praised his artistic talent in combining portraiture with architecture, and weaving intelligence and humor throughout the work. Since his childhood days, when all he drew were action heroes and rock stars, he has gone very far. No image or even impression is too hard for him now. He says that it’s like looking at a photograph and thinking what a fine picture it would be without those telephone wires or if this element was moved over there.
