Is it a bad idea to use mosaic tile on a shower bench?
We just remodeled our bathroom. We had to build a small wall (14″ wide) to fit the new tub properly. The contractor made this wall a sort of bench at the end of the tub and ued our flooring mosaic tile on the seat area….my concern is that water will gather on this seat and eventually leak into the seat itself….thoughts?
The tile makes a great seat/shampoo bench etc. Its HOW its done thats most important. This area , being a horizontal surface can collect water from the shower. Any water will collect there and weep through the grout joints eventually.
There are rubber and vinyl membranes that can be used but these need to be done a very special way. I ve used a special waterproofing membrane for over 20 years in this type of situation w/o a problem. Ask them HOW they did it and get it in writing.
I ve made good money over the years repairing and replacing horizontal surfaces over the years when people did not do this right.
