Travel (Mileage) Expenses – What’s the HMRC (Inland Revenue) Policy?
Does anyone know the HMRC policy on claiming tax allowance on business mileage? A friend of mine, who is a Carer, visits clients in their homes, and is paid 15p per mile from her employer for visits between clients. She was unaware that she could claim tax allowance for busines mileage until last year, So she submitted a claim, for year 2006 – 2007, on a form P87 for the mileage which she had claimed from her employer at 15p/mile. These claims are detailed on supplied forms and verified by her employer before payment!
However, after many letters between her and the HMRC, the mileage that is being stated as being considered is 3800 less than she is claiming. The problem seems to be, that the details submitted have been used to calculate the average mileage based on the shortest routes. But her work schedule, like most carers is so tight, she has no option but to get from A to B in the quickest time. What’s the policy? One dictates quickest the other seems to favour shortest!
