Help with characters?
I find that I often fall into one of two character types: Strong bossy female and brilliant, insecure male.
I try to combat these types, but sometimes I can’t save a character from being one of my more typical molds. I have no problem with either respective mold; I like how both types have their own strengths and weakness. However… how do I break out of this slump? How do I mix my characters up a bit more?
I’d suggest A) getting out there and talking to more people. Spend time with people who are not like your characters and try to get into their heads and way of thinking. Find things about them you like or find interesting, and that’ll make their type easier to write. B) Take a character you’ve seen somewhere, either on a TV show or movie, and build on that character or person. It’s not a copy as you will certainly come up with original ideas. Ryan Callaway mentioned that his character Amy, in Yearly Harvest, was based on a female professional wrestler named Danger, lol. She was a neat character. I wish you well!
