Why is the sky blue but turns green when there is a tornado approaching?
I was outside and about 3 hours the sky was blue. But 3 hours later the sky went a sort of olive green and then it got cloudy. I was just wondering because it is sort of weird.
It is well known that often times the sky turns a hue of green before severe weather strikes. The thing is, this doesn’t happen ALL the time, thus there is no rule of thumb with this strange phenomenon. However, if I saw a green sky, it would mean to me that I should turn on the TV/radio and find out what’s going on in my area.
Green is significant, but not proof that a tornado is on the way. A green cloud “will only occur if the cloud is very deep, which generally only occurs in thunderstorm clouds,” Bachmeier says. “Those are the kind of storms that may produce hail and tornadoes.” Green does indicate that the cloud is extremely tall, and since thunderclouds are the tallest clouds, green is a warning sign that large hail or a tornado may be present
