Mountain Climbing For Shells
Near where I live there is, while not quite a mountain, a very big hill. It rises from a wooded area near the coast and can be seen for miles around. Having had a full day locked in my spell room I decided to do what I had been putting off for years, to climb the mountain. I set off at daybreak, and with the aid of some heavy boots and a stout stick I arrived at the top by lunchtime. The ancients believed that gods reside at the top of mountains, so I sat amongst the mossy outcrop of rocks that formed the summit and waited. The sun blazed from a cloudless sky as I gazed at the blue sea mist rolling in from the North Atlantic, the only sound coming from a pair of buzzing bejeweled dragonflies hovering nearby. Then something remarkable happened, a cloud appeared from nowhere and blotted out the sun. The temperature dropped suddenly and the summit was enveloped in a thick white mist, I could no longer see the horizon or even the rocks around me. If this persisted I knew I would never find my way down, but I remained calm, awaiting events.
After a few minutes, a noise like that of distant thunder reached me through the mist, followed by the sound of falling rocks below me. As quickly as they had appeared the clouds of mist around me evaporated, leaving me once again in brilliant sunlight. The scene around me seemed unchanged, the dragonflies were back and I could make out my cottage as a tiny dot in the far distance. I quickly decided to make my way back down while the conditions were good and as I clambered down the rocky track I was amazed to see in my path a huge conch shell. The hill is over a thousand feet above sea level and certainly no one comes here, but more to the point this shell, pinky white and the size of a teapot, was definitely not there when I passed this way just an hour before. I picked up the shell and turned it over in my hands. It’s translucent surface was covered in beautiful pink scrolls that shone in the sun, inside it was a pinky cream and sounds of the sea came from deep within. I carefully placed this gift inside my pack and enjoyed a peaceful journey back home.
The conch is now sitting on my mantelpiece while I await the revelation that it surely holds, why else would it come to find me at the top of a mountain?
