im thinking about buying a trans am. is this an okay deal?
Is this a good deal? There is a guy selling a 1998 trans am with an LS1. He said the motor threw a rod bearing. The complete motor is sitting outside of the car. The paint is descent….interior is descent. Everything else is working on the car. It has chrome vette wheels, good tires, springs,tranny, slotted roters, lt headers, 3.93 gears and is an auto. He is asking 3000. I was gonna have the motor rebuilt anyway. My second question is, what would u have to do to the internals to get 400rwhp? And how much would it cost? Thanks in advance guys. I only wanna spend around 6500-7000 total for the car and motor/mtransmission
Don’t know where the first poster got his information. I highly doubt you’ll find ANY used, running, 98 LS1 T/A’s for a “little over $3000″. If you do, more power too you. That being said, I would try to bargain down on the price, but think if you WERE actually going for a rebuild anyway, then it’s not a bad deal at all. You can find some decently price OEM or lightly upgraded aftermarket pieces for WELL under $4000 if you do it yourself (if not… then you’re probably out of luck). If the trans is the 6-speed, you will probably be okay, if it’s an auto I wouldn’t trust it, much as the first poster says. If you’re really going to put power down on it, get it rebuilt. This will definitely set you back above the desired 7k. Fast, Reliable, Cheap PICK TWO. 400rwhp is doable on a stock bottom end, although you need to do it the RIGHT way and not just try throwing a huge cam in there. I would look for another candidate… although finding 400 reliable horsies in a T/A for 7k or under is probably unrealistic.
