Sarandon shows off her classy pearls at the Globes
The Golden Globes returned with much pazazz this year after being cancelled last year. To many, the question of who was wearing what was just as interesting as the award ceremony itself. But in amongst the dazzling gowns and sparkling diamonds, perennial Hollywood icon Susan Sarandon caught my eye with her stylish and sophisticated long pearl necklace, made by New York boutique designer Fred Leighton. Sarandon pouted that she would have to return the stunning piece after the awards and cheekily asked Fred on camera if she could keep it. I’m not surprised – it was a combination of the iconic sophistication of pearls with a modern, funky twist.
You might say that the fact that Sarandon, still stunning at 62, was the only A-list celebrity at the Globes to be wearing pearls, means that we’re going back to the days of pearls being the jewels of choice for the “older” woman? Far from it! Pearl jewellery has a timeless elegance and charm if you know how to wear it. How? By doing as the celebrities do and only accepting real quality! You can get pearls on the cheap, especially the abundance of fake and low grade stones on the internet these days, but they rarely have the style of the real deal. If you’re on a budget, go for natural freshwater pearls which can be beautiful. But for the true celeb treatment you should spend that little extra on saltwater pearls, the choice of Susan Sarandon on Sunday night.
Here is our list of the Top 5 celebrity pearl lovers over the years. I’m sure you’ll agree, each of them are classy in their own way and yet very different characters. These five names from the past and present tell you all you need to know about why pearls will never stop being one of the finest accessories of society’s high flyers?

MTV Unplugged in New York $4.55 The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, “I swear I don’t have a gun, I don’t have a gun” with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of “About a Girl”–from their earliest LP–chills even with quieted guitars… |

Remember Pearl Harbor [VHS] $2.39 This documentary about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is not so much about the events on the morning of December 7, 1941, as it is about the long series of events that brought America and Japan to open conflict. The rise of Japan as both industrial and naval power is contrasted with what the documentary openly declares to have been racist attitudes toward Asian nations exhibited by many Ameri… |
