Transform Your Room in an Afternoon
Making a huge change to your space doesn’t have to mean lengthy redecoration and large expenditure on new furnishings. These days there are some great ways to change any room on a small budget and with minimum effort. With amazing fabrics for cushions, throws and curtains, fantastic wall stickers and some new accessories you can alter the whole feel of a room in a few hours. Obviously the planning and shopping will have to be done beforehand but that’s the fun part!
Let’s start with a living room makeover. Obviously if you want things done quickly and cheaply we are going to have to work with the existing paint color and the old sofa. Everything else can go! Pull down the curtains, take off the cushion covers and out with any tires pieces of artwork. When you know what you are left with you can start to make some decisions. If it is a bland neutral space then the choices are endless. Decide what colors you would like to inject and what style you would like to go for and get shopping! For a pretty oriental theme there are some fab fabrics available. Beautiful printed silks in jewel colors will add some glamour to the room. Don’t feel that you have to match the cushions, throws and curtains as this is an outdated look. Team this with some spring branch wall stickers with gorgeous pink birds to complete the Asian feel. Finish off with a few glass vases and candle holders in a variety of colors and the room will be unrecognizable.
If on the other hand you already have some strong colors you may have to work around them. Mixing block colors is very on trend for 2011 so if you have one accent color at present doesn’t be afraid to add more colors to the mix. For instance if you went crazy for the Teal with Chocolate brown pairing that was all the rage last year then try and take away the brown and add some bright orange and some grey. This will tune into the 1950s Festival of Britain trend beautifully. If you love the wallpaper of the moment, Sanderson’s Dandelion Clocks but you can’t be bothered to wallpaper you could easily create this look with a tin of emulsion and some floating dandelions wall stickers. Simply paint the background semi-circles first then add the wall stickers – fantastic!
You may think that it is impossible to transform a kitchen or bathroom without a major refit but think again. Again wall decals can be added to kitchen doors to make a radical difference. You could use flocks of birds flying across the cupboards – sort of an ironic twist on Hilda Ogden’s flying ducks. Or you could use pretty floral for a Cath Kidston style makeover. In the bathroom there are small patterns available that could be used to decorate plain white tiles. Or why not add some glamour with a graphic of a chandelier or a mirror with candelabra?
Bedrooms are perhaps the easiest to update. A simple change of bedding and curtains will do most of the work for you. Again, don’t feel that you have to match these fabrics as that can look very staid and boring. Another popular trend for this year is to emulate the Raj. So why not seek out Bollywood designs and colors for a really dramatic and opulent feel in your bedroom? Purple, green, gold and silver are great colors to create this look. A visit to a local sari shop for the fabric, add a few metallic damask wall transfers and a couple of ornate candlesticks and this will be completed in no time.
Whichever rooms you want to change just remember to take your time with the planning stage. Do your research and shop around. Local markets and boot fairs are good places to find unique items that may inspire you. Online is the best place to look for wall stickers where a huge selection is available. Fabric can be found online too – eBay is a great place to find vintage designs and oriental imports. Remember that all these changes are simple to do and shouldn’t cost a fortune so they don’t have to stay forever. Therefore, be bold and transform your space for 2011.

Bookends: A Novel $1.99 Bookends, Jane Green’s third comic novel of contemporary love and lust, proves beyond a doubt that when it comes to light reading, plot is everything. Bookends makes a great case study because it has little going for it besides plot. Dialogue? Stilted. Characters? Clichéd. Writing style? Sloppy. And yet the book is well-nigh impossible to put down.
