Bangkok nightclub under inspection under fire
Thai police have charged a Thai nightclub owner in connection with a fire that broke out on New Year’s Eve that claimed the lives of at least sixty four people reports have said. The fire broke out at the upscale nightclub, Santika as about one thousand party people were ringing in the new year. Police have since reported that 64 people have lost their lives due to injuries from the fire. Suriya Ritrabue, the main shareholder of the company that used to own the Santika nightclub turned himself into authorities on Monday morning explaining that he was to blame for the disruption caused at the nightclub. He was charged with letting people under the age of twenty years old into the nightclub which is a serious felony in Thailand. Criminal negligence is worth a ten year prison sentence in Thailand and is not taken very lightly.
Authorities have indicated that the nightclub was not properly equipped with standard safety devices. Not even a sprinkler or properly indicated signs were present within the nightclub which has not helped the owner as this is building standards. There was no response to the charges enforced on Suriya Ritrabue however there are reports that he has apologized to all the victims involved with this tragedy. Most of the victims involved sustained serious third degree burns and some even fell into a coma. Of the forty people that have so far been identified, two were from Singapore and one was Japanese. It is suspected that the majority of the other victims are Thais. The blaze started near the stage where fireworks were being used as part of a live performance on the club’s closing night. The club is located on one of Bangkok’s busiest streets and its website features images of various bands performing on both indoor and outdoor stages. The New Year ’s Eve night was advertised on the club’s new website and was strangely named, ‘Goodbye Santika’.
