Why does plastic turn opaque white when you bend it?
If you bend certain types of plastic then they change from whatever colour they are to just an opaque white colour. Why is this?
When you bend plastic, it causes microscopic fractures in the material. When light crosses the boundary of one of these fractures, it’s passing from plastic into air, then back into plastic, etc. When light crosses the boundary between two subtances (like plastic & air), it refracts and/or reflects, which makes it change its direction.
In “unbent” plastic, you have light beams of all colors (i.e. white light) striking the plastic molecules, which then absorb some wavelengths and reflect or transmit others, but the light beams don’t bounce around within the plastic very much.
But in “bent” plastic, because of the fractures, the various wavelengths are likely to bounce around several times and then bounce back to your eye, rather than being absorbed by the plastic. That means what comes back to your eye is a mix of many different wavelengths, i.e. white light.
