Keeping Your Craft Area Organized
While many of us enjoy hobbies and crafts, it can be difficult to create and maintain an organized crafting area. Click here for more organizing ideas for your home, office or garage. This is an even harder thing to do if you have only small space available. Have a look at these ideas and use the ones that work for you. Adapt them to suit your own needs and even use more than one idea together.
A container that’s large enough to contain everything you need for your craft is absolutely necessary. Using lots of little boxes creates even more clutter. The space you need will depend on what crafts you are doing. For example, a craft like papier mache uses glue, paste, paints, brushes etc. that all fit in a relatively small container, but sewing can spread out over an entire room if you let it! Small cabinets, particularly those with drawers attached, can fill the bill nicely. Buy these new or used, depending on your budget and taste.
Containers on wheels are great if you need to keep your supplies in a different place from you use them. Those clear plastic drawer units you find in hardware or home supply stores are excellent and come in different sizes.
Shelves can also convert a small area of a room into a craft corner. But you’ll still need to put containers on the shelves themselves and you’ll want ones that look nice. Without the boxes, the shelves will look untidy.
What’s your best craft location?
As with containers, this depends on the craft. If you are working on big sculptures with big tools, you may need a whole room or garage to work in. You may need an understanding spouse for this type of activity!
Some crafts take relatively little space and can be accommodated in the corner of a bedroom,living room, garage or basement. The space should be comfortable, or you’ll never go there. Stop any drafts and put in nice bright lighting. If you use electrical equipment, you’ll also need ready access to outlets and you don’t want cords stretched across a room as an invitation for you and others to trip.
Here’s an idea that’s a container and a workspace combined: an armoire or a big spacious wardrobe. A lady I know stores the supplies and works on two different crafts using just one big old wardrobe in her bedroom.
