if u are asian and lack aldehyde dehydrogenase, is it possible to build up enough tolerance to enjoy alcohol?
i fall into the approximate 50% of asians who have the inactive form of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which leads to acetaldehyde buildup, causing the “asian blush” and unpleasant feelings. half a bottle of beer turns my face beet red and gives me a headache. ive never gotten to the elusive “buzz” stage everyone speaks so fondly of, even with a sip of beer. the more i drink, the worse i feel.
so my question for all those similarly-afflicted people out there is: can you drink enough to build up your tolerance to alcohol to the point that you can enjoy the pleasant side effects? and before i get a lecture about how bad alcohol is, please dont bother. im not the type who will go out and get trashed and have to be carried away in a stretcher. i just want to have a beer or two with my friends once in a while and not feel like crap after 3 sips. it sucks being the only sober one among a sea of people having too much fun to care. =/
I am the same as you when I use to drink beer. I don’t drink beer that much anymore (if I do only a few selected beers), but try mixed drinks. When I use to drink beer, just a few sips and POW!! I I turn beet red. I switched to mixed drinks, and it’s a lot “safer” on the face. It’s also the atmosphere you are around.
I have gone through about 5 mixed cocktails in a 2 hour span and just turned a little blush like/buzz feeling, but not so bad as to when I drink beer.
It’s also genetics. The female side of my family cannot touch the stuff. They get so red that they start getting body rashes. Another point could be that you might have some little allergic reaction to the barley in beer. Just try different types of domestic/imported beers until you find something that wont make you turn red. Again, try mixed drinks as well.
On a minor note, there is no way you can build up tolerance. It’s just how your body reacts to the alcohol. You just have to find the beer that will make your body react less. So far, the few beers I’ve drank that didnt make me turn like a red balloon were german and japanese beers.
