ARE YOU SAFE FROM HAZARDOUS DUST IN YOUR HOME?
Attention all home renovators, DIY enthusiasts, builders and handymen (and handy women!)… you may be at risk.
You’ve all heard of the risks and dangers of working with asbestos, but you may not know just how dangerous another common household substance can be and that’s lead. Lead exposure can be extremely harmful and can cause long-term health problems.
People working in the building industry, demolishing or renovating can be at risk as the most common source of lead dust is from paint in older buildings. People living in older buildings are also potentially at risk – pets too – with pregnant women and younger children the highest risk groups.
The older the home, the greater the likelihood of there being lead-based paint. Up until the early seventies, lead based paint was common, and although it isn’t generally problematic if it is in good condition, the risks increase when it starts to peel, chip and crack or during building works. Lead dust is also found in attics, under floor boards and in cavity walls, so there are risks when building work involves the demolition of ceilings and walls, intrusion into the roof space (eg installation of skylights) etc.
When renovating or building, people are advised not to dry scrape, heat (with a blowtorch etc) or use a sanding machine on lead based paint as that can result in the formation of lead dust. Dust can also form when painted surfaces grind together, such as windows and window sills, old painted furniture etc. Some hardware stores in some areas do sell DIY testing kits, but when it comes to eliminating the problem, it’s best to call in the professionals and to use hazardous dust machines for lead dust extraction.
And merely painting over the problem will not eliminate the risk. So if you’re building, renovating or perhaps just living in an older home where lead dust could be a problem, call in the experts who will use the right equipment manufactured to regulated safety guidelines to do the job safely, reliably and effectively.
These vacuum machines are heavy duty but lightweight, made from tough materials so that they are virtually indestructible and suited to rough and heavy duty cleaning. They are designed to move around easily, access confined spaces and come with a host of special applications such as special exhaust filters.
According to a leading supplier of hazardous dust machines Perth, these are not only used on building sites– they’re in high demand anywhere there is a cleaning application including hospitals and operating theatres, in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry etc. And on the subject of hospitals, it’s interesting to note that in Australia, in nearly all of the cases where children were admitted to hospital needing treatment for lead poisoning, the lead had come from paint flakes or dust made during a renovation at home – so parents and builders, please take note.
And if you’ve just realized that you’ve spent the last ten minutes chewing on your lead pencil while you’ve been reading all this – stay calm! ’Lead’ pencils do not contain lead – it’s graphite that is the black bit in the middle – and it’s 100% safe. But while your pencil is safe, your building site or old home may not be – so it’s wise to do a proper hazardous dust clean up to ensure everyone is out of harm’s way.
