what kind of clay is good for pottery and firing in a kiln?
there is a wide variety of clays which are suitable for pottery ranging from Terracotta to porcelain. Usually if you buy clay in a store it comes with a number (eg. cone 05 or cone 5 etc). The number refers to how hot you have to fire the clay, and also tells you that if you fire it much hotter your clay will melt.
You can look up the required temperature on a list. Make sure you don’t mix clays which have a different firing requirement. If somebody else is firing you clay for you, they usually don’t fire a lot of different clays, so ask them what kind they want you to use.
Apart from that, any clay you buy in a pottery store should be suitable, ask the people in the store to help you to select the best clay for your project.
If you are digging natural clay, basically you would have to run a number of tests what the best temperature for that clay is and whether it’s suitable. Make sure you fire unknown clay in something like a bowl, so if it does melt, it doesn’t mess up your kiln.
