Can a veneer be placed over an inlay?
I just recently had an inlay placed in a tooth, and am now considering a smile makeover. One dentist said she could place a veneer over the inlay whereas the other recommended a crown.
Thoughts?
short answer is yes. it could be done however the inlay should probably be replaced with a full coverage crown, not inlayed and veneered. full coverage crown will have less margins of potential areas of decay, full coverage will better resist fracture cause remember there will be less tooth structure. i’m assuming that the tooth is either one that has a metal colored inlay or a there’s staining or discoloration on the outside part of the tooth, which would be reasons why you’d want a veneer.
here’s what i’d do. look in the mirror and smile as big as you can and see if you can see the inlayed tooth and decide how it will look with a veneer. it’s probably too far back in the mouth where a veneer would not be as beneficial as in the front. you may not even want to veneer that tooth and just leave it they way it is. do the upper four or six teeth and then see if that works for you. if not go for a full crown afterwards.
