DNA is a polar molecule. How does this relate to a glass rod?
I’m in a biology class and in our lab, we extracted DNA from a strawberry plant and from our cheek cells. Anyway, after the whole process, we spooled the DNA with a glass rod (kind of like how you use a fork to swirl the spaghetti with to pick it up easily). The question I have to answer is “why did we use a glass rod to spool the DNA?”
Is it because DNA is attracted to glass? WHY?
Also; what is it about the shape of DNA that allows me to spool it with a glass rod?
This article says: DNA spools onto the glass rod because the exposed ends have polar chemical groups on them. Glass is also polar, so the ends of the DNA are attracted to the rod. By winding the rod, you are basically just reeling in the DNA molecules.
