Is glass classified as a liquid?
I remember seeing something about glass being an extremely viscous liquid that over 100s of years will slump. This is supposed to be why very old windows aren’t that clear. Is this true? How is glass classified…solid or liquid?
This question has been asked on here many times and I’m greatly suprised the overwhelming response is incorrect. Glass is a solid. People will claim old glass is thicker at the base than at the top, and this can only be a result of glass flow with time. Yet you never here of glass being layed horizontal and sagging in the middle. Glass is a rigidly bonded solid with an aperiodic structure. The bond strength of glass is much greater than that of metals and yet no one talks of metal flow with time. The viscosity of room temperature glass is on the order of 10^42 P, which means any dimensional variation would require at least 10^23 years to occur. The reason glass seems dimensionally different in old glass is because they were made dimensionally different with old methods based on centrifical force. Glass can be made from any compounds melted and cooled before they form a regular crystal structure. So a glass can be even be made from metal, it doesn’t have to have sand or silica at all. I have a Ph.D. in glass science and have devoted my life to the study of this wonderful yet misunderstood material and I can assure you glass is classified as a solid.
