Fish Tank – Algae on Glass?
I have a small only 40 litre little tank, (It’s been keeping me happy) & it’s always getting algae on the glass. I’m scrapping it off every few days to keep it clean looking, but at the top of the tank where the scrapper can’t quite reach it’s started to become a dark green, even a little red coloured. i know algae comes in all sorts, but this stuff is so persistant.
Anyone know why it’s coming on so much, i did have an invasive time with snails, of which i hopefully have netted all the buggers out now. They somehow got in on a bunch of plants i bought to go in there, of which i then had to rip out. Could the snails of been a the problem causing rising toxic levels or something similar.
Also the filter is only a trickle filter built into the top of the tank.
Do really enjoy this small set-up & need to upgrade this year, so any help would be appreciated.

Algae growth is caused by light levels and nutrients in the water, so those are the things you need to adjust.
How are your plants growing? If you get them growing well then they will use up the excess nutrients in the water, and that starves off much of the algae. So you may need to upgrade the tank lights. The standard lights that come with most tank kits are not very good for growing plants, but seem to be plenty good enough to grow algae.
Snails don’t cause algae, and are usually useful at controlling it. Their waste, and that from the fish of course acts as fertiliser, so you need to control that with either live plants or water changes.
So you need to establish a balance between light, plants and fertiliser, which you don’t have right now.
