Glass Coe

Glass Coe
Kiln firing soft glass is ending up cracked between colors after the fusing?

As the title indicates: I’m using soft glass COE 104 Moretti
Fusing schedule:
200/hr to 1250
500/hr to 1450
Hold for about 30 minutes
Full to 1250
200/hr to 950
Hold 1 hour
200/hr to 200

My moulded glass pieces that I slump into the mold do good, then when I take them out to fuse something more and give a better fire polish look with an annealing it is just not working. I’m getting cracks in just about every clear encased item.

How do I do it? Should I adjust the schedule? How many times can 1 piece of glass go through the kiln before it looses it’s strength? How does kiln firing glass affect the COE factor?

I respect anyone with the know how to do this kinda stuff and I really appreciate knowledgeable advice. Thanks!

The most basic question to ask is whether all of the glass is tested compatible at the 104 – you may have one or more colors that is not well matched to the others including the clear. If the supplier is not testing the clear for you, then you have to test each color against the clear to encase it.
With glass taken to molten, you can change the COE by burning off elements of the chemistry, but I have not heard of this in fusing at the temps you are using.
My experience suggests going lower that 1250 on the drop in temp, more like 1100 although there is some rebound. The purpose of the drop is to avoid devitrification (white frost on the glass) but normally it has no effect on cracking/COE results.
