Recalling The Confederacy: Collectors Buy Up Old CSA Bonds
Have you ever seen a Confederate States of America bond?
The South’s leadership urgently neededfunds for its war effort–indeed, for its very existence. Because of that, it undertook common practice national treasuries have often done in the modern era: it put out bonds. These instruments constituted guarantees to repay, in the future and with interest, the loan that a citizen or other “investor” had made in the southern cause.
The end of the war, and the demise of the Confederate States, guaranteed that the lenders would never collect on what they were owed. The certificates themselves often languished for years in boxes and attics.
Today, though, those Confederate bonds are sought-after collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (and other paper collectibles) in the online auction market for a pretty decent return.
If you’ve ever owned a CSA bond certificate, you certainly understand why many persons are desiring them. Start with the fact that they are quite decorative. Physically, they’re pretty large–very much more imposing than a CSA dollar bill, for instance–and ornately decorated. They look wonderful displayed on a wall. In addition, they draw attention as a bit of the past. You would have to be fairly well off to own an actual Civil War firearm these days, but CSA bond certificates are within the reach of just about every history devotee.
The CSA government had printed a number of bond issues during the course of the conflict. For each of the issues, various “denominations” (referring to the bond’s face value) were printed. These all had different decorations, and often even different colors of paper, to distinguish them one from the other.
Folks who collect them are fascinated with the vignettes, or illustrations, used on the different CSA bonds. Among the ones to be mentioned are an mythological male figure propped on an elbow, with charts and a world globe; a thundering locomotive with a ship in the background; a a paddle-wheeled steamer; a seaman holding a Rebel flag and leaning against an emblematic cotton; and the Confederacy’s president Jefferson Davis esconced in a tableau of cannon and flags.
If you also acquire and frame one of these bond certificates and put it on display, perhaps in a study or office, you will enjoy looking at it and studying it for its arresting, antique appearance. If you’re like me,, you will undoubtedly find yourself musing about what it must have been like to live during that momentous era and during those particular exciting yet tragic years.
Many Confederate bonds were in fact sold abroad, particularly in Britain, and not to the increasingly devastated citizens of the South. My Stonewall Jackson bond was found in a hoard discovered in England in modern times. These sorts of hoards turn up from time to time, driving prices downward in the paper collectibles market, however, the situation is usually temporary. Of late I’ve learned that Stonewall Jackson bonds are becoming difficult to find, so I’m doubly grateful that I was able to get one when I did.
If your interest in Confederate bond certificates extends to more than simply holding on to and admiring their beauty and historical legacy, you will discover them to be an excellent entre into what is known as “scripophily.” This is the hobby of collecting old financial certificates, which can include bank instruments, stock certificates, railroad bonds and more.
If you would like to explore this subject in more depth, you can find books, as well as lots of information on the Web pertaining to Confederate bonds. You should learn more about their history and then attend coin shows where some of the dealers may have them for sale. If you’re just interested in the artistic aspect, you can purchase one or two of the more common issues relatively inexpensively. If you are interested in trading for profit or as a side business, of course you will need to seriously study these bonds, their various issues and how to evaluate their condition, and be prepared for the give-and-take of haggling with other knowledgeable dealers.
