stable cast?
I have a 6 month old foal and now that the winter weather is upon us, he’s now in a stable at night. The problem is, is that he rolls a lot and quite often gets cast.
He has a fairly large stable but chooses to roll in the corner. Luckily he rolls while I’m there and I am then able to turn him over as soon as he gets stuck. But I’m frit to death that he will do it one night at a time when I’m not there.
What can I do?
Bankings!!! ( :
What are you using for bedding? This may be easier with straw. build the bankings up to almost halfway up the stable wall, that way if he does get cast he can right himself. Also make sure the bed covers the whole stable floor.
If you don’t know what bankings are, make a flat bed as you usually would, and then around the edges build up layers of straw/shavings, about 30cm wide (a ruler) and when you’re halfway up the stable wall slope it down from the top to the flat layer of the bed.
If it is straw make sure he’s not eating it! As he may get cholic!
