why does it hurt when you put silver foil on your fillings?
I was picking masticated kebab meat from between my teeth with the rapper off a Kit Kat and the next thing I was in agony. It was like I had received an electric shock. Why does this happen?

Metal is a perfect conductor of electricity. When you place tinfoil against a filling, the pain you feel is a genuine electric shock of up to 2 volts, generated by the filling itself.
The mixture of metals in the filling creates a small electric cell, a bit like a battery. When the aluminum is introduced by the foil, it acts as an anode to the fillings cathode. The natural electrolytes present in saliva create a ‘salt bridge’. The contact essentially short circuits the cell. A weak current flows between the electrodes (tooth and tinfoil) and is detected by the sensitive nerve of the tooth as an unpleasant sensation. A metallic taste can also be generated by tin ions released in the reaction.
