Cabinet Scrapers Are A Must For Any Woodworker – ToolsRUs
Commonly used by woodworkers, cabinet scrapers are needed to reduce high spots or smooth out boards. Pre-milled lumber sold in stores is seldom perfectly true. So as not to end up with irregularly-shaped wood creations, a cabinet maker has to take the steps to flatten and smooth out the wood they use to build things. It is not a tool that needs frequent replacement, for it’s easy to re-edge. Some woodworkers swear by this tool, especially when making things like tabletops. It can both level and smooth the wood simultaneously, largely eliminating the need to do a lot of sanding.

Flat and shaped like a rectangle, a cabinet scraper is made from extremely durable high-carbon steel. Usually no more than 0.6 or 0.8 millimetres thick, scrapers come in a few sizes and are typically five or six inches in length. The working end of the scraper is its long edge. The tool must have a burnished or rounded long edge, creating what’s known as a burr, in order to be useful. The burr is nearly impossible to see since it is only 0.05 millimetres or less high. Scrapers don’t come with a burr, so you will have to prepare them after purchase. It only requires a few tools, and it is quite easy.
If making a new burr on an existing scraper, first file off the old edge before moving on to the next step. If the scraper is brand new, you can skip this step. To take off the old burr, place the scraper upright in a vice and run the file along each side over the burr. Next, you will want to flatten the narrow edge because it was rounded slightly when you made the last burr. You can use a file for this, too. To create the new burr, run a burnishing tool made from hard carbon steel at a slight angle to the edge over the entire length of the tool. The burnishing tool will once again round the edge slightly and form the wave-like hook that is a burr.
Always use cabinet scrapers with the grain of the wood to prevent any gouges in the surface. Frequent sharpening is required, for scraper edges lose their burr in about ten minutes. When scraping only produces dust, not shavings, it is necessary to smooth out the edge and reform the burr.
