Landscaping Pickaxes And Mattocks – ToolsRUs
For certain outdoor jobs involving your lawn, garden or general landscape, pickaxes and mattocks can come in very handy sometimes. Due to their length and shape, these tools provide a lot of leverage, whether you pulling up stone pavers, cutting through thick roots or digging into tough soil. Pickaxes are primarily used to breaking up or removing stones and concrete, while mattocks serve a variety of other purposes. If you do a lot of work in your lawn and garden, a mattock is an indispensable tool.

Both pickaxes and mattocks are comprised of two basic parts. Providing a grip as well as the ability to use the tool effectively, they feature a long handle made of fiberglass, wood or sometimes light metal. The versatile head of each tool is made of strong, hard steel and fastened to the working end of the handle. The heads on both tools are double sided. Such a design gives you the advantage of simply flipping the tool over and using a secondary pick or cutter when needed. The double-sided head also provides a counterweight. One side of a pickaxe features a curved spike. The spike is good for breaking up stone, concrete or other hardened surfaces. The second side of a pickaxe is another spike, but it is usually flattened and wider like a chisel. This side can be used to cut through roots as well as pry things up.
A mattock is very similar to a pickaxe in terms of its handle and double-sided metal end. Two primary types are used: cutter mattocks and pick mattocks. Their common feature is an adze on one side. With a flat, wide blade, an adze is kind of like a hoe, for its blade is oriented at 90 degrees to the handle. Good for breaking up tough or rocky soil, pick mattocks feature a spiked opposite end. A cutter mattock features an axe on its opposite end. Although narrower than a normal axe, it is oriented along the same plane as the handle, perpendicular to the adze. Cutter mattocks are great for chopping through roots, loosening soil, digging trenches and other uses.
