Canine Vulva Smear Gram Stain Question?
If a gram stain of a canine vulva reveals staphylococcus (clusters of round bacteria) and the majority of the gram stain is negative (pink) but each individual coccus has a purple (positive) dot in the center what kind of infection do you think would cause this?
I posted this both in health and in pets because the pet part doesnt have a specific health section and human’s and canine’s get a lot of similar infections.
I would re-do the stain. It could be contamination with another species of bacteria or clumping of the dye. When you took the colonies from the media were they did they all have the same morphology? If there was more then one species present on the agar (which is likely) maybe your loop was contaminated with one of these other colonies. I would personally re-do the gram stain and if you get the same results, start again from the initial swab and cultivating. Just an idea but you might be viewing a Bacteriophage in the bacteria, not to sure what this would stain as or the likelihood or this as I have studied more medical microbiology rather than animal.
