Is Your Chesapeake Bay Retriever Teething?
Once your Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy reaches the four or five month mark, it will start growing permanent teeth. This stage is often referred to as “teething.” Unfortunately, this period in your puppy’s growth and development can be very uncomfortable. Luckily, there are things you can do to help appease your dog.
Check for signs of teething.
First things first, confirm your Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy’s situation. Watch out for certain signs like swollen or bleeding gums, missing teeth, or teeth marks on your furniture. If your dog displays any of these signs, chances are your puppy has begun teething. Unfortunately, teething can prove to be an uncomfortable and painful experience to your Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy.
Puppy teething can easily lead to destructive chewing.
Seeing that your puppy has done damage to your furniture can be frustrating. Your initial reaction may be to scold or slap your young puppy. But try your best not to do so. Destroying you furniture is not something your puppy wants to do, he simply does this because it needs to relieve itself from the discomfort it is feeling.
There are some things you can do to help your Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy deal with the discomfort.
Give it ice, or serve up some frozen vegetables and fruits it can chew on. The cold certainly helps keep the discomfort in check. Buy chew toys and have your puppy play with it. If your dog is used to eating pellets, add in some water to soften it for your puppy.
In like manner, you can have your young Chesapeake Bay Retriever undergo puppy training to avoid destructive chewing.
Crate training keeps your puppy away from objects that you don’t want being damaged. Make sure nothing else that you don’t want damaged is within your puppy’s reach. You can use commercial products that discourage chewing. Spraying a product like bitter apple on furniture will prevent your Chesapeake Bay retriever puppy from chewing on it.
Most importantly, have a lot of puppy safe toys available for your pet. You may also notice your dog nibbling on your fingers while playing with it. This is a mere act to relive the discomfort it is feeling. It is not trying to hurt you, but you must discourage this behavior as well. Never let it get used to this habit. This is what chew toys were invented for.
When your Chesapeake Bay Retriever hits the 7 month mark, chances are, all 42 teeth would have been replaced with permanent ones. In the mean time, deal with your teething puppy with utmost patience and care. The teething stage can be a pain to you, but more than anything, think about how your puppy must be feeling at this stage. With extra precaution, there’s no doubt that this stage can go smooth and easy.
