A House of Worship – St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne
A peaceful place of worship and a Melbourne landmark since the late 19th century, St Paul’s Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne. Designed and built in sandstone with limestone embellishments in the Gothic Transitional architectural style said to be partly English and partly decorative. The project was executed in stages and was beset with early problems but was eventually consecrated in 1891. The spire was erected in 1926. The church dominated the Melbourne skyline until the 20th century when modern glass and steel buildings ended its dominance. Located on the eastern corner of Swanton Street and Flinders Street it is diagonally opposite Flinders Street Station, which was the transport hub of 19th century Melbourne and even today is one of the busiest areas in Melbourne ensuring the cathedral a place in the centre of city life.
The interior of the cathedral is known for its carved cedar woodwork, tessellated tiled floors, stonework and stained glass work. The light filled interior is naturally lit through an opening in the ceiling. Light also pours in from amber coloured windows in the lower and high chambers and through twenty five dalle de verre faceted stained panels. In addition the glass processional doors provide a light filled entrance. The doors have been constructed from 25 mm cast glass in the dalle de verre method.
The cathedral’s pipe organ was built and installed in 1891. It was rebuilt in 1929 when the action was electrified and a new console was supplied.
As with all historic buildings renovation and rehabilitation are constant needs to maintain this living monument. Extensive exterior rehabilitation was carried out in the 1960s; the church organ was updated and repaired in 1989, and in the 1990s the spires were strengthened against traffic vibrations. A seven year extensive rehabilitation project was completed in 2009.
As intended, St Paul’s continues to be at the centre of Melbourne city life and engages with its people.
