On Having a Deeper Appreciation for Flamenco
Many people find music and dance to be a very communicative art form although quite different from other art forms like sculpting, painting, architecture and the likes. Music has a large area of functions from signaling the beginning of war to leading a man and a woman into marriage.
Music played a vital role in the ancestry of all countries, including Spain; the Roman culture has been its main influence for hundreds of years and it also paved the way for the introduction of Ancient Greek music. Spain’s cultural influences contained mostly the Ancient Roman and Greek music and dance forms, although several other influences came and made their mark in Spain’s history such as the Visigoths, Jews, Moors, and the likes. A well-known music that’s from Spain is Flamenco which several people believe is widely known everywhere in Spain. Ironically, Flamenco is actually not known everywhere in Spain; it’s only knownin a certain points, particularly the Andalusian region of Spain and in a few of the smaller surrounding regions. Many of its ancestry has been lost and most of what people have knowledge about now are products of oral traditions rather than historical writings.
Flamenco is cut into three sections and is composed of the guitar, the dance, and the song elements. Being a music that began in Andalusia, Flamenco has complex, very fast passages, and the dance is distinguished by loud foot works. The art form kept on improving even though it was largely neglected by neighbouring regions.
Studying the ancestry and origin of Flamenco, it marked a turbulent era wherein a lot of prejudgments against Gypsies are everywhere including in Spain. Andalusia was made up of gypsies, Jews, Moors, and other nationalities that were regarded to be lower class during those times, and naturally they got no respect from the upper class people back then. Because Flamenco was mostly danced by the lower levels of society, the upper class people do not much curiosity on it to give much weight to it and the historians did not gave much bearing to it and recorded very little information about it. Also the Jews, Muslim, and Gitanos which make up the lower class were being tormented during the Spanish Inquisition in 1492; given that they are poor, they maintained the music and dance by oral tradition as majority of them are illiterate and cannot write.
Historians and other experts up to this generation are finding out the accurate history and ancestry of Flamenco. However, it’s so remarkable that instead of dying out, Flamenco gained worldwide popularity and is still one of the most famous music and dance forms until today.
