sakar 500mm f8 mirror lens – help, photo-ace?
tried this lens on pentax k100d digital with same results on canon film camera. cant focus out to infinity. focuses to 1/2 block away.cant fosus on clouds,about 1000ft. away.whats going on.

I just checked my old Nikkor 500 mm lens and it actually can focus beyond infinity, this because depending upon the ambient temperature, the focusing characteristics change so the lens needs to be able to reach a point of focus rather than to a specific marking on the distance index on the lens.
That said, I don’t know the actual design of the Sakar mirror lens, but what you can do is with the lens off the camera, try focusing from its closest focus point to its furthest. See if any part of the lens moves toward the back of the lens toward the camera. If it does, you may be hitting the mirror with part of the lens as you focus. This is counter intuitive since usually as you focus closer, the lens extends, but with a mirror lens, different designs may focus in a different way.
Since you are switching between camera systems, my guess is you have a universal mount with a Pentax K-mount and Canon FD or EOS adapters.
Most camera stores can be very helpful when it comes to helping customers with issues like this as long as they are staffed with at least one “old timer”
